Inspiration : My prototype is an amalgination of two cages from my grandparent's house & my own. because of the small dogs we have.
Maya, my grandparent's dog, is a small puppy. where they live, there is a hawk every now & again. because of this we can't really take her out side unsupervised. She is also extremely hyper active because of this she constantly jumps against the side of the cage. Because of this, if her cage outside wasn't cover by platic, she liekly would have gotten caught in the chainlink.
|
This was originally a simple chain-link cage that my grandpa modified to be protected by the elements. but it's kinda hard to clean sometimes due to it's size. it quite large but it's short, because of this you need to bend down to reach over to get the droppings. But the floor is tiled with gaps for water to flow out of. But thpse tiles get filthy underneath and need to be clean eventually.
|
this cage was rusted when we got it, but it's constant abuse from the elements didn't help it. because of this we don't use it anymore despite how much we should be. but the bottom is what I drew the inspiration from. The black floor can be pulled out for an eaiser cleaning. but because we didn't cover it it gets leaves & other random debris in it making it harder to clean then normal.

"pre-experimentation" : these next images were used as a way of getting us used to being creative and using our imaginations to come up with ideas so when we got to our ideas we would have an idea of what to do/ start from.
When we first started, we were told a them and draw ideas based around that the overall theme of pets, which was the theme of the actual project itself. but there were ideas added to pets for a starting point: pets in space, pets in the opera, and pets in the office. and these were some of the ideas. I started with actuall inventions but eventually I just was drawing doodles that were related

This first one is from pets in space. It includes a fish, dog & parrot in special space suits specially designed for them. the parrot is practically a jet, the fish is just a completely sealed bowl with rockets and the dog has a suit built around their needs moreso then the other two.
This one is also from the space theme. This has planetary exploring ideas. this includes a "snake suit" giving it limbs. The rodent rocket, which is filled with small rodents such as hampsters and such, And the rat rover which is meant for collecting sames by a kleptomaniac rat.
This was from the pets at the orcastra line. Besides for "Moo-zart" and the dog with a piano frisbee, most of the ideas were jokes. This was because all the insterments were either impossible or extremely impractical for the animals to play, such as the furby playing a trumpet or the snake on the drum without any way to hold it.
This was the final one we made, being pets at the office. These is where there was little ideas besides some doodles that have a very weak connection to an "office". while this was allowed, I personally felt this was the weakest of the four and considered omiting from the page due to it's aimlessness, but that would mean cutting part of my expirimentation and put it in regaurdless of my feelings.
With this one, We worked with a partner to make a story based on two objects we saw. We picked a cow skull, a mounted fish and included a paint brush from around the room. I had drawn the cow skull and paint splatters on it, while she drew the fish. as we drew we had made a story. The story was that "long john pierre" the french fish wanted to use his painting ability to revive "Mr. Rossenwier" the long dead creator of Chick-fil-A, but he's jsut a fish so he just ended up painting on a skull.

This idea was mainly based on the game, Subnautica. The hall way can have a hatch or window on the end similar to to the idea. But I disliked it for a plethera of reasons. one it didn't quite solve my problem, so I opted to make it an add-on similar to an addition to a building. The second problem is that it looks like a male genital. besides that I made some other shapes for add-ons.
This page was a collection of inside additons similar to a cat house or something very similar. Though this idea was rushed and cobbled together. Afterwards I realized it was not a good idea. What would dogs use this for? it it for the dog or the people? while an idea, it was not an idea I personally use.
|
Process : I started out by grabbing some materials. I got black & gray paint and brushes and a box. I wanted something that wasn't too large because of the limited space I had and the not knowing how I wanted to bring my idea into the physical world. So I grabbed a pop-tart box I was saving for a later project. I cut of three of the four tabs because they were not needed for my model.
|
Next I painted over the box with gray as the main color with black being the roof and tab/collection box. I painted it with 2 to 3 coats each to make the brighter colors of the box not show through. This gave it a nice, solid look.
Once the painted dried, I gave it some details. The way I did this was drawing some lines with a pencil. These lines were crude and highly unorganized but they got the job done for the time being. I made a small door and little dog but other then that, I did little else for detail.

Critique/Reflection : While the small mock up wasn't supposed to be the final version, it ended up being that way. Because of this, I'm slightly disapointed with myself and the quality of the work. The lines are hastily slopped on and it looks rushed overall. Because of this I dislike it as a whole. But I never made anything like this, so it was a new expirence to bring one of my ideas from a drawing to a real thing. so despite it's flaws, I'm not entirely disappointed.
Compare & contrast :
Compare : They both are dog cages designed to protect small dogs & puppies from preditors around the neighborhood. they mock up is also a mix of both types of cages so it has a very similar design to the two. it is more shaped like the "Tray cage" rather then the "cover cage"
Contrast : The mock-up is small, small enough to fit in my hands. It is also not functional.

Connection to ACT :
1.) The cause and effect relationship of my inspiration and my own work is the idea. The idea of a protective cage with a pull-out "tab". My idea is a mix of the two inspirations. It takes the best parts of each and combines them.
2.) The overall approach is utility. The ability to pull out the bottom to better clean it is quite useful. The covers on the taller cage was made as a modification to keep the dogs inside safer and warmer.
3.) The general conclusion I have discovered is that providing that more functionality is important. Making a cage is easy but adding extra functionality is a bit more difficult to add.
4.) The central idea was the functionality of a cage. They were mainly designed for extra fuctionality both you and your dog.
5.) My inferences I made while researching was that people want functionality. Having the extra feature can provide a easier time with specific task, such as cleaning.
