Exhibition text : Because of the quarantine, I have slowly started to feel very disconnected to the world I live in, and I want to express that in this piece. I made It was made using a block print so it's a reversed version of what I invisioned, but that doesn't matter. It was inspired by german expressionism and my own personal life. It's supposed to show how the quarantine isolated many people from the outside world.

Inspirations:
Art movement in focus : German expressionism
German Expressionism is an art movment that started in the 1920s and is used to emotions. It emphasized the artist's inner feelings and ideas rather then reality as it is.
Some other inspirations are from a song, "Rivers in the desert" from the Persona 5 soundtrack. This song's name gave me insperation to draw a city that's been overtaken by a desert to show how empty some cities got during quaratine. There is also the plastic dividers at our school that makes me feel isolated because it's quite difficult to interact with people.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, River Bank at Elisabeth (Berlin), 1912-1913

Planning/Experimentation : My planning is very simple and more akin to a train of thought then an actual plan. I work better if I see what I should work on at a glace then with in papagraph.
On this page I thought maybe to try a man behide bars to represent isolationism, but it didn't work out as planned. Thus the street design was the "final." next I tryed seeing it the street should be horiziontal or slightly tilted but went with the horizontal becuase it would be easier to do for this style.
-The first day I starting printing was lackluster. All but one print barely had any ink on them becuase I was trying to be conservitive with it, and the one that was nice was crooked. At first I thought my block was messed up or something, but it was just from a lack of ink. therefore besides for the knowledge of needing more ink, that day felt like a bust.
-Day two went way better then the first: I knew exactly where to look for all the materials, I put alot more ink on then the first day, I made the prints straight (or as straight as I could.) besides for one small mistake on the first one, they all turned out relatively nice. |
Critique : I had used linium block prints before, but it was on a much more basic level and was more there for expanding my horizion. While it lacks the depth it could have had, my inspirations were also quite minimalist in some areas. But compared to "River Bank at Elisabeth" you can tell what the inspiration.
Reflection : This piece turned out quite well for only having done this style onece before, a few years ago. The overall look of the print feels extremely similar to most of my day to day art. As much as it help me expand to a new medium, I don't feel I'll be trying it anytime soon in my personal time. Maybe if I had the materials on hand I would be more willing. But I feel like it hasn't helped me develop how I want my style to look because it is extremely similar to what I draw.
Connections to ACT
1) The cause & effect relation between my art & my inspiration is areas of "colors". The black & white areas are quite noticable at first glance on both, with some areas having lines to show depth and/or detail. But compared to the inspiration, my piece has the negitive space as the outlines rather then the "black" space.
2) The overall approach the author has that Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was invalueable to the art world. They listed who he was influeced by and who was influenced by him. They also go through many major accomplishments he had.
3) The general conclusion I have discovered is that Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was quite important to the art world. Many famous artist and movements were influenced by him such as Vincent van gogh & Fauvism. He also had many achievements such as ¨Expressionistic handling of paint represented a powerful reaction against the Impressionism that was dominant in German painting when he first emerged¨(https://www.theartstory.org/artist/kirchner-ernst-ludwig/)
4) The central idea was
5) My inferences I made while researching was the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was passionate about his art. He commited suicide after his art ws destroyed by the nazis. I feel like most people wouldn't have done that, but he did and is therefore quite proud of his work.
